What happened, in plain words

More than 1 200 workers at Renco Mine stopped work on 9 October 2024 because they had not been paid since July. A court declared the strike unlawful and ordered them back on 2 November 2024. The mine is owned by RioZim, which was short of cash across its operations. The stoppage showed how unpaid wages, rather than pay rises, had become the main trigger for mine strikes in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Minerals Workers Union secretary general Justice Chinhema quoted. Court ordered a return to work on 2 November 2024.

The rule this record had to meet

Workers collectively withdraw labour, work to rule or take other protest action, or a formal notice of such action is served.

Evidence required: A named union or worker group, the dates of the action or the notice, and the stated demands, from the union itself or an established publication.

Read thisWorkforce events are a record of what a named and citable source reported. They are not a census of job losses or job creation in Zimbabwe. Many changes in employment are never announced, and small employers are almost never reported at all, so the picture here leans towards large employers, listed companies, the public service and unionised sectors. Read the evidence link on any event before relying on it.
