What happened, in plain words

A Chinese backed cement plant at Chegutu was 90 percent complete and already employing 450 people, mostly young people from nearby communities. Commissioning slipped from May to August 2026 because equipment deliveries were delayed. The plant is designed to make about 800 000 tonnes of cement a year and will run its own 50 megawatt power station. New cement capacity matters because two established cement makers were in distress at the same time.

The rule this record had to meet

An employer commits to a large number of new jobs, typically alongside a new site, a new line or a new contract.

Evidence required: A stated number of jobs and a named employer, drawn from the employer, an investment authority or an established publication. Planned jobs are recorded as planned, with the expected date, and are never presented as filled posts.

Read thisWorkforce events are a record of what a named and citable source reported. They are not a census of job losses or job creation in Zimbabwe. Many changes in employment are never announced, and small employers are almost never reported at all, so the picture here leans towards large employers, listed companies, the public service and unionised sectors. Read the evidence link on any event before relying on it.
