What happened, in plain words

Nurses across the country stopped work from 20 to 22 April 2026 after the April pay rise turned out to be only about 30 to 40 United States dollars, far below the 550 to 600 dollars they had expected. Their union called the increase a token that could not be taken seriously. Reports at the time said the country was already short of more than 5 000 nurses. Hospitals including Sally Mugabe Central were disrupted and patients bore the cost.

Zimbabwe Nurses Association president Enock Dongo quoted. The April increase was about 30 to 40 dollars against an expectation of 550 to 600 dollars.

The rule this record had to meet

Workers collectively withdraw labour, work to rule or take other protest action, or a formal notice of such action is served.

Evidence required: A named union or worker group, the dates of the action or the notice, and the stated demands, from the union itself or an established publication.

Read thisWorkforce events are a record of what a named and citable source reported. They are not a census of job losses or job creation in Zimbabwe. Many changes in employment are never announced, and small employers are almost never reported at all, so the picture here leans towards large employers, listed companies, the public service and unionised sectors.
